  1. American Healthcare Connect Consortium Members Awarded Nearly $850,000 from the Healthcare Connect Fund to Offset 65% of Broadband Costs

    May 19, 2016: Simsbury, CT

Three Connecticut Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) who are members of the American Healthcare Connect Consortium have been awarded $849,309 this year to date by the Healthcare Connect Fund to offset 65% of their broadband and internet/ethernet costs.
The Healthcare Connect Fund (HCF) receives $400 million annually for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to assist certain public and not-for-profit healthcare organizations (hospitals, FCHCs, medical schools, local health departments, community mental health centers, mobile clinics). The Healthcare Connect Fund grantees in non-rural areas must be members of a consortium. All Americans with personal and/or business phones pay a small tax to the FCC every month on their telephone and mobile phone bills, which is the funding source for the Healthcare Connect Fund.
American Healthcare Connect Consortium (AHCC), based in Simsbury, CT, currently has three member organizations in Connecticut who will receive a 65% cost offset for approved broadband and internet/ethernet. These AHCC members are:
    • Community Health Center, Inc., based in Middletown, CT, which had 15 sites approved
    • Optimus Health Care, Inc., based in Bridgeport, CT, which had 8 sites approved
    • Southwest Community Health Center, Inc., based in Bridgeport, CT, had 5 sites approved
American Healthcare Connect Consortium had its Request For Proposals (RFP) approved in June, 2015, by the Universal Services Administration Company (USAC), which administers the Healthcare Connect Fund grants on behalf of the FCC. The RFP was posted on the USAC website on July 1, 2015. Fiber Technologies, Inc. (now part of Lightower Fiber Networks) won the competitive RFP and entered into a contract with AHCC to provide high speed broadband and internet/ethernet for AHCC consortium members.
American Healthcare Connect Consortium is in discussions with potential new consortium members in Connecticut and throughout the USA who want to take advantage of the 65% cost offset for high speed broadband and internet/Ethernet services.
